  • The situation in one sentence: where, what was short, and by how much.
  • The decision that was yours rather than the team’s, and what you chose not to do.
  • One number or one consequence that shows it worked.

Every competency is scored out of five with a line you actually said as evidence, and the weakest answers are rewritten as structure and specifics, never a script.

What Hotel & Lodging interviewers keep scoring

First impression & welcoming guests

Greets every visitor, guest or patient promptly and warmly, manages the front desk presentation, and sets the tone for the organisation in person, on the phone and by email.

Check-in, bookings, billing & systems

Processes arrivals, departures, bookings, payments and invoices accurately on the property management or booking system, balances the shift and resolves discrepancies.

Complaints, difficult visitors & service recovery

Handles complaints, angry visitors and awkward situations at the desk calmly, resolves within their authority, and escalates or recovers the experience when needed.

Switchboard, messages & information accuracy

Answers and routes calls professionally, takes accurate messages, gives correct information and never leaves callers or visitors without an answer or a next step.

Security, access control & compliance

Manages visitor registers, access badges, deliveries and building security procedures, protects personal information (POPIA) and follows emergency procedures.

Reliability, punctuality & desk presence

Opens the desk on time, maintains presence and grooming standards through the shift, manages breaks and cover, and hands over properly.

Multitasking & staying organised under pressure

Handles simultaneous arrivals, calls, deliveries and admin without losing accuracy, and keeps the desk, logs and follow-ups organised.

Guest experience & brand standards

Delivers and enforces the property's service and cleanliness standards consistently, anticipates guest needs and personalises where it matters.

Service recovery & complaints

Handles guest complaints (room issues, noise, billing, service failures) calmly, resolves within authority, follows up and turns failures into loyalty where possible.

Daily operations & cross-department coordination

Runs daily operations across front office, housekeeping, maintenance and F&B: morning briefings, arrivals and departures, room readiness, VIPs and groups.

Housekeeping & maintenance standards

Understands room and public area cleaning standards, inspection routines, linen and chemical control, and preventive maintenance so rooms are safe, clean and sellable.

Revenue, occupancy & cost awareness

Understands occupancy, ADR and RevPAR, contributes to upselling and rate decisions, and controls departmental costs (labour, linen, amenities, energy) against budget.
