Lesson planning & curriculum delivery

Plans lessons with clear learning objectives aligned to the curriculum (e.g. CAPS), sequences content and activities, and delivers with pacing that keeps learners working.

Classroom management

Establishes routines and expectations, keeps learners engaged, and handles disruption calmly and consistently without humiliation, in large or mixed-ability classes.

Assessment & feedback

Uses formative and summative assessment to find out what learners have understood, gives feedback that learners act on, and adjusts teaching based on results.

Differentiation & inclusion

Adapts content, tasks and support so learners with barriers to learning, language differences and different levels of readiness can progress, working with SBST and parents.

Learner wellbeing & safeguarding

Notices learners who are struggling, bullied or at risk, responds appropriately, and reports abuse or neglect according to law and school policy.

Parent communication

Communicates with parents proactively and honestly about progress and behaviour, listens to their concerns, and handles hostile or absent parents constructively.

Reflective practice & professional growth

Seeks and acts on feedback from observations and results, tries new methods deliberately, and collaborates with colleagues to improve teaching.

Subject knowledge

Understands the subject deeply enough to explain concepts multiple ways, anticipate misconceptions, and answer learners' questions beyond the textbook.

Instructional leadership

Improves teaching quality across the school through observation, feedback, curriculum coverage monitoring and using assessment data to target intervention.

Staff development & performance

Develops teachers through coaching and structured development, manages under-performance fairly and firmly, and retains strong staff.

School culture, discipline & safety

Builds a safe, orderly and respectful school through a clear code of conduct, consistent consequences, learner voice and responses to bullying, violence and safeguarding concerns.

Governance & stakeholder relations

Works with the governing body, parents, department officials, unions and community with clarity about roles, and manages conflict and political pressure.
