  • The situation in one sentence: where, what was short, and by how much.
  • The decision that was yours rather than the team’s, and what you chose not to do.
  • One number or one consequence that shows it worked.

Every competency is scored out of five with a line you actually said as evidence, and the weakest answers are rewritten as structure and specifics, never a script.

What Early Childhood interviewers keep scoring

Observation & developmental assessment

Observes children systematically across developmental domains, records what was seen rather than opinions, and uses observations to plan and to flag possible delays early.

Play-based curriculum planning

Plans a programme built on purposeful play and the National Curriculum Framework, with clear developmental intentions, a balance of child- and adult-led activity, and adaptation for individual children.

Positive behaviour guidance

Guides behaviour through routines, clear expectations, co-regulation and consistent, non-punitive responses, and understands behaviour as communication.

Child safeguarding, health & safety

Keeps children safe through supervision ratios, hygiene, safe environments, illness and injury response, and recognises and reports signs of abuse or neglect in line with the Children's Act.

Partnership with parents & caregivers

Builds trust with families, shares each child's progress honestly, listens to family circumstances and culture, and handles difficult conversations about behaviour or development.

Inclusive practice

Adapts environment, activities and communication so that children with disabilities, language differences or trauma histories participate fully, working with specialists and families.

Routines & learning environment

Runs predictable routines and transitions and sets up indoor and outdoor spaces that are safe, stimulating and support independence.

Instructional leadership

Improves teaching quality across the school through observation, feedback, curriculum coverage monitoring and using assessment data to target intervention.

Staff development & performance

Develops teachers through coaching and structured development, manages under-performance fairly and firmly, and retains strong staff.

School culture, discipline & safety

Builds a safe, orderly and respectful school through a clear code of conduct, consistent consequences, learner voice and responses to bullying, violence and safeguarding concerns.

Governance & stakeholder relations

Works with the governing body, parents, department officials, unions and community with clarity about roles, and manages conflict and political pressure.

Budget & resource management

Manages the school budget, fees or allocations, procurement and infrastructure lawfully and transparently, and makes trade-offs that protect teaching.
