  • The situation in one sentence: where, what was short, and by how much.
  • The decision that was yours rather than the team’s, and what you chose not to do.
  • One number or one consequence that shows it worked.

Every competency is scored out of five with a line you actually said as evidence, and the weakest answers are rewritten as structure and specifics, never a script.

What Manufacturing & Production interviewers keep scoring

Safety, machine guarding & stop-work

Works to the OHS Act and plant rules, never bypasses guards or interlocks, reports hazards and near misses, and stops a line when someone could be hurt regardless of output targets.

Following SOPs & work instructions

Runs the process to the work instruction and settings every time, checks first-off and in-process samples, and raises deviations rather than improvising.

Quality at source & defect containment

Detects defects at the point of production, contains suspect product, records and escalates, and participates in root cause and corrective action.

Hitting output, OEE & changeover targets

Runs the line to takt or rate, minimises stoppages and changeover time, records downtime honestly and reasons for losses, and drives small improvements.

Continuous improvement, 5S & problem solving

Maintains 5S standards, takes part in kaizen or problem-solving activities, uses simple tools (5 Whys, fishbone, standard work) and follows through on actions.

Reliability, attendance & shift discipline

Arrives for shifts on time, follows handover procedures, keeps accurate production records and behaves consistently on nights, weekends and during peak periods.

Team & line leadership on the floor

Runs a shift or line team: allocates people to stations, manages absenteeism, coaches operators, addresses poor performance early and keeps the team informed of targets and results.

Legal compliance & management systems

Knows the applicable legislation (OHS Act, MHSA, COIDA, environmental law) and standards (ISO 9001, 14001, 45001, food safety schemes), maps them to the site's obligations and keeps the system audit-ready.

Risk assessment & hierarchy of controls

Leads baseline and issue-based risk assessments, HAZOPs or FMEAs, applies the hierarchy of controls beyond PPE, and verifies that controls actually exist and work on the floor.

Incident investigation & corrective action

Investigates incidents, near misses and nonconformances to genuine root cause using a structured method, writes reports that stand up to scrutiny and tracks corrective actions to closure.

Auditing, inspections & data

Plans and conducts internal audits and inspections, samples correctly, writes findings that are objective and evidence-based, and uses audit and incident data to direct effort.

Influencing supervisors & managers without authority

Gets line managers, supervisors and contractors to own safety and quality, challenges senior people constructively, and uses stop-work authority when needed without becoming the 'safety police'.
